What You Should (and Shouldn’t) Bring to Your Apartment Pool

Grab your sunscreen and floppy hat, because summertime is in full swing.

Spending the day at your apartment pool is a cost-effective way to beat the heat. But that doesn’t mean you need to pack everything except the kitchen sink. Whether you’re hosting a small get-together or lounging solo, check out this list of what to bring and what to leave at home before you head to the pool.

Essentials for a Day at the Pool

Appropriate swimwear: You’re sharing a public space, so it’s important to be considerate when selecting your swimsuit. One-pieces, bikinis, swim trunks, board shorts and rash guards are perfect. Undergarments like bras and underwear, thong swimsuits, see-through materials and regular diapers should be left at home.

Towels: If your apartment complex doesn’t provide community towels, grab a few to take with you. You can use one to dry off after a dip and the other to cover lounge chairs.

Sunscreen: Broad-spectrum sunscreen that’s SPF 30 or higher will protect your skin from damaging UV rays and reduce your risk of sunburn. Don’t forget to reapply every two hours.

Water and snacks (if permitted): It’s easy to get dehydrated when spending time in the hot sun, so bring a reusable water bottle to quench your thirst. If your community permits food around the pool, consider packing fruit, chips, pretzels, popsicles and other items that are easy to eat and clean up.

A bag: Because the pool is a community amenity, it’s important to keep your belongings contained. Stow your essentials in a tote bag, backpack or basket so they don’t take up too much room.

Sunglasses and hat: Your eyes are sensitive to UV rays, so throw on a pair of shades to block the glare off the water. A hat also covers your neck, hairline and ears, which can burn easily.

Extra Items to Upgrade Your Fun

Inflatable tubes, pool noodles and mats: These items are a must if you want to take a relaxing float. They’re also great for kids, but be sure to supervise play to ensure they don’t harm themselves or disturb others.

Waterproof phone case/bag: Splashing and cannonballs can be hazardous to your electronics. Bring a waterproof case or pouch to seal your phone and prevent damage.

Portable fan: Depending on the weather, even sitting in the shade can be sweltering. A handheld fan keeps the air moving when you’re taking a break from the water.

Aloe vera gel: Applying aloe vera gel after swimming can help soothe sunburn quickly. It’s also a good way to hydrate your skin after exposure to intense sunshine and pool chemicals.

What Not to Bring Poolside

There are certain items you should leave behind, especially if your apartment pool rules prohibit them. The following may not be suitable to bring along:

  • Glass containers
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Oversized inflatables
  • Large speakers
  • Pets
  • Cigarettes, cigars and vapes
  • Grills
  • Furniture

Pool Etiquette to Remember

Look over these etiquette guidelines to ensure everyone has a pleasant experience:

  • Limit the number of guests you bring.
  • Don’t hog multiple lounge chairs if you’re not using them.
  • Rinse off lotions, hair products and sweat before swimming.
  • Follow posted pool hours.
  • Supervise your children as most communities don’t employ lifeguards.
  • Clean up after yourself.
  • Keep music at a reasonable volume.
  • Don’t use the pool if you have open wounds.
